It is worth laying out the differences between GOP issues and British Brexit ones, for the sake of clarity.
1. In terms of treaties, the US has commitments to trading treaties involving the movement of goods. The EU is a treaty designed to create a European empire: it's about the movement of goods, money and people within an area largely run by the French and Germans in their own interests. This is how sovereignty matters to the British. There's a constitutional challenge to our status as a nation.
2. In terms of borders, the US is a huge, relatively thinly populated country with immigration intrinsic to its history. The illegal immigrant population is on average low crime and does hard manual jobs Americans don't wish to. The borders are terrestrial to north and south and are hard to police and impractical for building in many places. The UK is a relatively densely populated island with a natural sea boundary. The immigrants coming to Europe are largely Moslem, create zones of unemployment everywhere and have provided the seedbed for second generation fundamentalist terrorist movements - which is to say, culturally-speaking, they aren't absorbing into the way local people live, they are seeking to impose their own ideas and way of life on the people who have welcomed them.
3. Islam, of course, is a religion and not a race. It's a choice. Many Moslems are fine. But some flavours of Islam are impossible to live with - luckily, ISIS removed many of them but we know they will likely reappear and start doing the same stuff again. Whereas in the US, the dangerous, fundamentalist, racist groups are domestic and American. There are some Mexican gangs but they are bigged up by the right to generate fear. I think the US is blessed with its illegal population.
At any rate, there are cosmetic similarities, but the issues are very different when you scratch the surface.
