I hope it reminds Americans that all countries are works in progress - mistakes become assets in the long evolution of a nation, so long as lessons are learnt.
The backwards-looking idea that the founders were geniuses who thought of everything (originalism) is, in my opinion, valid only if the constitution was designed to evolve and to do so well.
For my money, the US constitution needs some oil in the cogs. This president was the proof that more safeguards are required. His efforts to subvert the system might be used to find the weak points, and to strengthen them.
For my money, there might be some use in an untouchable trust committee over the presidency filled with people he doesn't appoint, but which provides advice (institutional memory) and can call him or her to account. Perhaps it could be made up of people who have been awarded the highest bravery medals by previous administrations, ex-presidents, ex-Fed chiefs and ex-chief justices, or something like that.
Clearly congress cannot do the job well when both houses belong to the same party as the president. This much we now know.
ps in the UK, generals have to salute soldiers who have been awarded the Victoria Cross, and not vice versa. I like that.
