'My daddy's home': The first days out of prison for a man released from a life sentence
Edward Douglas was sentenced to life in prison in 2003 for selling 140 grams of crack. After spending nearly 16 years behind bars, Douglas, 55, was recently among the first prisoners freed by the First Step Act, which eases drug sentences for federal inmates.
On the night he left prison and returned to Chicago earlier this month, Douglas reunited with several children he hadn’t seen in years. “They couldn’t all hug me at the same time so they took their time, crying,” Douglas said. “It was an experience I will take to my grave.”
