Well, I got home from the hospital earlier today. The surgery was Wednesday afternoon and they kept me two nights. My prostrate was much larger and more hardened than expected and so the procedure, which usually only lasts about 45 minis to an hour, took nearly two hours because they had to remove a lot more tissue then he had expected. That’s why they kept me in the hospital so as to make sure all of the debris was discharged from the bladder. I still have a catheter until Monday, but the bleeding has stopped, and everything is now coming out ‘lemonade’ yellow, which is good news. Now they said that when they do remove the catheter on Monday, that there will probably be some minor bleeding but that’s normal.
Tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday) I’m going in for surgery.
Now this may be too much information, but about seven weeks ago I started to have some urinary problems. The doctor at first thought it was just a simple unitary tract infection and proscribed a course of antibiotics, but it didn’t seem to help. He tried something else and it kept getting worse and so he finally sent me to see a urologist. This was just before the holidays. Christmas was rough, a lot of pain and the urine was starting to look bloody. It got to where I could hardly go to the bathroom, so on the day after Christmas the urologist had to insert a foley catheter to make sure that my bladder was emptying. That night the amount of blood increased to the point where the original catheter clogged-up and we had to go to the emergency room where I spent 12 hours having my bladder irrigated until the bleeding was reduced to a minimum. They put in another catheter and gave me more antibiotics and sent me home, after my urologist stopped by to check what had been done.
My next appointment was the day after New Year’s Day where they took the catheter out to see if things were working better, but they weren’t. So, they ‘scoped’ the bladder and prostrate (I hope I never have to go through that procedure again) and determined that the problem was an enlarged prostrate and while there are medications that I could take, they have some side effects that could be problematic for my particular situation. Therefore, they put in another catheter and scheduled the surgical procedure for Wednesday. The procedure, Bipolar Transurethral Resection of the Prostrate, which while it’s a minimally invasive procedure, it does require the insertion of an instrument through the urinary tract and is intended to open up the canal through the prostrate by removing a layer of tissue, what my doctor described as a “ream job” . This is supposed to be an out-patient procedure, which will be done under a general anesthetic (thank God), but it’s possible that I might have to stay overnight for observation, however that will be up to the surgeon.
