'It's a mess': Low-income tenants could face eviction as affordable housing contracts expire during shutdown
Federal contracts for more than 1,000 properties housing low-income renters have expired as a result of the government shutdown, and hundreds more are set to expire in the coming weeks. That could place thousands of poor families living in Section 8 housing at risk of eviction, tenant advocates and landlords say.
“It’s a mess,” said Ellen Lurie Hoffman, federal policy director for the National Housing Trust, an advocacy group that owns Section 8 properties. “The pain is coming a lot earlier than we thought.”
