Our global problem is that his supporters are unbelievably gullible.
They resent being called rubes. I suspect their level of resentment of being described this way is because they fear they may be.
But maybe this is normal behaviour for people in the process of being conned. They desperately hold onto the con rather than the reality. The possibility of being seen to be credulous is humiliating.
Trump's continuing challenges of obvious reality are part of the con man's art.
For those of us not thus inspired, the con is obvious. But things clearly look different if someone is playing games with one's hopes and fears.
