And the other obvious point. Who's to say the armed person protecting the synagogue isn't actually the baddie planning the assault?

The issue of knowing who the attacker is remains.

You can at least get some control by removing guns from circulation and narrowing ownership via licensing. You can't achieve the same effect by enlarging the population of gun owners. My right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is damaged by ubiquitous access to guns.

A professional in law enforcement said when under pressure, they (the pros, cops) have an 18% rate of accuracy when firing.

He made the point because of those who suggest more people should be armed, noting what a mistake that would be.
