At a higher level of abstraction, the US is utterly reliant on the wisdom of its people.

Now that we find that so many of its people are daft, what of US democracy?

Maybe a constitution which contains the popular will when the people behave like a mob is worth thinking about. The checks and balances clearly don't work as a corrective. Perhaps there are alternatives to a bottom-up-only constitution.

Until they are cured, the US is in terrible trouble. It's the people that elected the nut, albeit via a minority. One shouldn't be surprised that the nut has anutty flavour.
