GA Guv Candidate Urged to Resign Over Voter-Suppression Move
Democrat Stacey Abrams has called on Brian Kemp, Georgia’s GOP secretary of state and her gubernatorial rival, to resign following new reports that his office is seeking to remove more than 50,000 minority voters from the rolls ahead of their race to become the state’s next governor. Kemp is both the Republican candidate for governor and is in charge of voter registration in Georgia.
His office has allegedly held back more than 53,000 voter-registration applications, nearly seven in 10 of them from black residents, because of sometimes minor discrepancies,
such as a typo or missing letter between a voter’s registration and their driver’s license, Social Security, or state ID cards. Abrams’ spokeswoman called for Kemp to stand down as “so that Georgia voters can have confidence that their secretary of state competently and impartially oversee this election.” Abrams would be the first black woman elected governor in any state, and is running neck-and-neck with Kemp, according to recent polls.
