Being drunk and sexually assaulting a woman is an offence. But not remembering something done when drunk isn't perjury.

So K can reasonably say I know nothing about the incident, can avoid providing support for the allegation, without admitting culpability and without contradicting Ford.

If that's the case, Ford may have insufficient evidence to proceed any further and K might step aside with his dignity somewhat intact for the sake of the nation and for women in general.

Having K's dirty laundry laundered in the senate is no way for a nominee to reach the Supreme Court. I hope he steps aside for the sake of the US and its institutions.

Actually, I think it would be good for the country if the GOP loses a nominee, having cheated the Dems of one. Then reconcile the senate by installing Merrick Garland in the open seat.

At this point, saving the US from its terrible politics by an act of decency is worth a lot. K is in a position to provide it. But I doubt he is willing to pay the price.

What's actually going on here is that Bill Shine is running a bunch of Fox-style angles to which his Republican audience is responsive.

1. The subtle hints that women are emotional and thus liable to be unreasonable.

2. The notion that Ford is a liar.

3. The contradictory idea that all 17 year old boys behave this way.

4. Misstating the nature of the touching as naive and clumsy rather than aggressive and scary.

5. Portraying Ford as an activist.

6. Generally pretending to be interested in truth while pursuing a partisan agenda which cares not a whit for it.

A fair-minded person waits for the results of a proper investigation and the public interviews before forming a final opinion. There are people who do sexual assaults and there are people who lie about them. One of these two fits one of these two definitions. At this point, I only have a suspicion and that is that K was drunk and has no memory of the incident.
