One week from today, my wife and I leave for Hawaii. Now, I've been to 49 states and 33 countries, but never Hawaii. We're flying first class (using some of those air miles I earned while working) from LAX to Honolulu on Tuesday the 11th. We're staying at the Waikiki Marriott Resort & Spa and we have rooms that overlook the beach (again using some of my Marriott points I accumulated over the years). On Wednesday we're doing a city tour which includes Pearl Harbor. On Thursday the plan is to rent a car and do our own tour of Oahu.

Also on Thursday we plan to stop and visit a former co-worker (in fact I hired him back in the 80's). A couple of years ago he and his wife retired to Hawaii and we've had a standing invitation to visit ever since. They've also invited use to dinner Friday evening at the Waikiki Yacht Club (he married well). On Saturday we board the Norwegian Cruise Line's 'Pride of America' for a seven day cruise to the other islands, making stops in Maui, the Big Island and Kauai. We've booked an upper deck cabin with a balcony, and we have a couple of excursions booked for each stop.

We return to Honolulu that following Saturday where we go back to the Marriott for one night, flying home the next morning, Sunday the 23rd.

Of course, I'll take lots of pictures and will let you all know how it went.

Note that when we first started to plan this trip in the Spring, we wanted to take one of those tours that would take you to the rim of Kilauea, but of course all of those sort of tours have since been cancelled. We are booked for something that should get us close enough to at least see the smoke and ash, but that's about all that they allow now (and before you ask, we're NOT doing any helicopter tours). Also, we're hoping that Hurricane Lane hasn't messed-up any of our other tours (our travel agent says we should be OK).
