Trump, GOP use Mollie Tibbetts' murder as rallying cry for tougher immigration laws, but her family is not on board
President Donald Trump has zeroed in on the Iowa college student’s death, allegedly at the hands of an undocumented immigrant, as a sell for his border wall with Mexico. Iowa's two Republican senators, Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, blamed the death on lax immigration laws. And former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich declared on Fox News that "if Mollie Tibbetts is a household name by October, Democrats will be in deep trouble" come Election Day.
But some members of Tibbetts' family have fired back. “We … are not so small-minded that we generalize a whole population based on some bad individuals,” one of Tibbetts' cousins wrote on Twitter.
