I think he fears the Russians.

Reported, as the witness testified of the off shore accounts, his wife had tears as she left the courtroom for several minutes. She sees the handwriting on the wall.

He faces another trial in Sept.

And after he's found guilty he can be forced to testify to the grand jury.

Because his trial makes it already seem highly likely he was diddling the IRS.

So he's probably heading for jail, and knows it.

Why didn't he try to do a deal?

Because he believes he will escape punishment.
