It’s normal human nature … you get more of what you incentivize and less of what you penalize. When you take more and more of a person’s earnings, they are less and less willing to put forth the effort of earning more. When you give people who aren’t productive money, it’s a reward and all too often the best financial deal they can get, so of course more are going to go for it and game the system any way they can.

When someone is on unemployment, for instance, the average time to find a new job can be six months to almost a year, yet when the unemployment runs out, they suddenly find jobs within a few weeks or months. Nothing has changed in the job market itself, just that when they can’t count on that government check coming in and more, paying their own way gets a lot more important. I’m not saying it’s good thing that a person has to take a job that pays less than what they wanted, but the fact that they *could* have taken such a job all along sort of makes a farce of the whole unemployment “insurance” program. Other people had work harder or get by with less to pay the taxes that let the other person coast, plus all the money that pays all the bureaucrats who handle it.

Is that right? To be *forced* to help someone who won’t help themselves no matter what your personal situation is? When you’re forced to choose between medicine and food in order to let someone refuse to take a job that doesn’t pay at least $50K a year or outside of his preferred profession? Where is the justice in that? And why should it depend on what a person makes to begin with? Do the rich have any fewer rights than I do? Are they somehow not a human with equal rights?
