As the Trump administration pulls back, states step in to regulate questionable colleges
The federal government used to crack down on for-profit colleges with records of poor performance or deceptive practices. But the Trump administration has backed away from that role, and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has appointed several industry executives to oversee their former companies.
Now states have decided to step in to fill the oversight vacuum. Many are filing lawsuits or taking enforcement actions against colleges that defraud their students. “This federal government is walking away from their responsibility to do basic consumer protection," said a state senator in Maine.
