'My heart just dropped.' $4 verdict shocks family of black man killed by white police officer
A jury awarded the family of Gregory Vaughn Hill Jr. $1 for funeral expenses and $1 to each of his three children, aged 7, 10 and 13.
Hill was shot behind his closing garage door by a white Florida sheriff's deputy responding with a partner to a complaint of loud music. A grand jury declined to indict the officer, who said Hill had pulled a gun. The Hill family’s lawyer disputed that Hill raised a gun toward officers, questioning how the weapon ended up in his back pocket before he died.
