Just because the US conducted slavery longer than many western societies, which meant it sought to justify it for longer than it ought, doesn't mean that treating any hint of racism as if it's the ultimate crime now is any more true. Nor can virtue signalling on the subject of race expiate the past.
A racial incident can be anything from rude speech to an iniquitous crime, depending upon the purpose and the action it involves.
The treatment of racist incidents reminds me of the metoo thing, in which every act is treated as like every other. But what Harvey Weinstein appears to have done is different from what Morgan Freeman is accused of doing. Roseanne didn't lynch anyone. She said something rude, unfunny and stoopid and regretted it.
People with a hair-trigger definition of victimhood give us a bland culture. Give folks time for regret. Only once they have shown they have none is it time for a response.
