'Ripped from their arms': More families are being split up at the Mexican border

by Suzanne Gamboa and Daniella Silva / May.22.2018

The Trump administration is increasingly separating parents from their children when they cross into the U.S. illegally, following a policy change announced earlier this month. Lawyers and immigration advocates report scenes of anguish in detention centers, where parents say their children have been "literally ripped from their arms," Maureen Franco, a federal public defender, said.

"There is something terrible happening here that Americans would not support if they understood it," F. Scott McCown, director of the Children’s Rights Clinic at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, said.
