China agrees to buy ‘significantly’ more U.S. goods and services in bid to ease trade tensions, according to joint statement
By Washington Post Staff May 19 at 2:26 PM

The U.S. and China announced Saturday afternoon that two days of “constructive” talks between American and Chinese officials in Washington had led to an agreement for China to buy more goods and services — including “meaningful increases in United States agriculture and energy exports” — as the two countries work to defuse a brewing trade war.

The White House released a joint statement from both countries saying that the U.S. would dispatch a team to China to work the details, which would include expanding trade in manufacturing and tougher enforcement of intellectual property laws and regulations. The joint statement said the goal would be to “substantially reduce the United States trade deficit in goods with China.”
