MN Cop Charged With Murder in Justine Damond Shooting
A Minneapolis police officer who fatally shot an unarmed Australian woman last summer was arrested on murder charges Tuesday.
Mohamed Noor, who has been on paid leave since the shooting death of Justine Damond in July, turned himself in after learning of the third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges against him, authorities said.
He was fired from the police force Tuesday.
Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said Noor “recklessly and intentionally fired his handgun” at Damond, who suffered a gunshot wound to her abdomen and died at the scene.
She had called 911 to report a possible sexual assault near her home and had approached Noor’s patrol vehicle when she was shot.
“There is no evidence that Officer Noor encountered a threat, appreciated a threat, investigated a threat, or confirmed a threat that justified his decision to use deadly force,” Freeman told a news conference. Noor faces as much as 25 years in prison on the second-degree murder charge and an additional 10 for second-degree manslaughter if convicted.
