WASHINGTON (WJLA) - Approximately 7,000 pairs of shoes were displayed on the lawn outside the U.S. Capitol Tuesday to represent the number of children killed in U.S. shootings since the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
The memorial was created by organizers advocating for gun reform.
Shoe donations were accepted at several locations in the D.C. area Monday, prior to the construction of the display.
The event is led by Avaaaz.
