You've hit the nail on the head. A Leftist will never admit it, but getting rid of all the guns or, at least, all that they can, is the goal.
The 2nd Amendment exists to prevent totalitarian, dictatorial government. What the government might have in the way of high-powered military force can be countered to some extent by the armed population's sheer numbers. A tyrant might use the military to murder millions of American opponents, but because of the widespread ownership of guns, a single citizen will eventually murder HIM from afar. The Powers That Be know this, so they haven't yet made the kind of "Progress" they want in the United States.
Totalitarian, dictatorial, "Progressive" government is, however, precisely what the Left wants and intends to introduce. Oh, how they want it! Maybe not directly in some of their minds - because they haven't sufficiently thought it through to come to that realization - but indirectly. It's their goal. The more control the government has over the individuals, the better. They won't say so because there'd be a violent backlash and it's still too early to risk that. But people who think can look down the path on which the Left is taking us and see where it goes. There aren't too many thinkers among the Marching Morons, but there ARE thinking beings in the country.
This is the truth behind Progressivism that its leaders will never admit.
Now you can expect zz to come back with "Bullshit" or some other nonsensical response. There's no way he'd be willing to discuss what he actually wants and why - because that would lead to the fact that what he wants is akin to Nazi Germany or Communist Russia, albeit with a totally different name.
