...when I was a mere lad of about 12 my father had a fall and broke his hip. He was laid up about six months. He had a sales route in a tough neighborhood and my mother had to take it over while he was hurt. My father called me into his bedroom and handed me his smith and Wesson 32-20 revolver and told me to ride with and protect my mother. He had already taught me the basics of safety when he gave me a 410 shotgun and a 22 rifle. He had shown me how to shoot the pistol while down in the woods shooting the 22 and 410.
