...I had a ruger bolt action that fired the 7.62 X 51 (.30 and I could take clay pigeons and sit them on this dirt bank at 100 yards and break em regularly with open sights. Trigger wasn't as good as I would like. It would slide then grab and then slide some more. Herky Jerky stuff.

5.56x45mm is too light for consistent kill shots on whitetail deer. A kill shot can certainly be made, but you take a much bigger risk of just wounding the animal, which is unacceptable to me. My AR is chambered for 7.62x51mm, which is much more than adequate for deer.
