It starts with a bad apple like Weinstein. In England, it ends up with the sacking of a cabinet minister who put his hand on a journalist's knee, about which she was not offended.

By all means change the culture so that powerful men know they are vulnerable if they behave very badly.

But get the lawyers and the journalists out of the business of using popular but strict morality in hindsight to target people on the other side of the aisle.

We want a broad conversation, even if it means there are rough edges. If there's a pattern of noxious behaviour, that is a problem. Otherwise, only Puritans will be allowed to represent us.

I know I have made this point about having a broad and inclusive dialogue for a long time on many subjects. What a toxic sort of thing the people who demand perfection always produce.

Now we are relitigating ancient history and allegations no one could make stick the first time around.

Is the plan to give Trump another pick at the Supreme Court?

Or is whether a judge allegedly said some crude things a long time ago the more important issue?

I believe Hill told the truth. And her judge is not my favourite by any means. But when are we going to discover that there are other issues that matter as much or more so again?

Or will the purge continue.

Yes, get rid of the really bad apples. But no, let's not reenter the Puritan era. Because we are headed there.
