Pitching great Roy Halladay killed in plane crash off Florida coast
Former MLB pitcher Roy Halladay, who threw a perfect game and a postseason no-hitter, was killed in a small plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday, authorities said.
Halladay, who won the Cy Young twice and was considered by some accounts to be the best pitcher in baseball from 2001 to 2011, was the only person on board, the Pasco County, Florida, sheriff’s office said.
Halladay, who was 40, played for the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies before retiring in 2013. An eight-time All-Star, he recorded over 200 wins and would have been eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2019, according to Major League Baseball.
