There is nothing that any POTUS could say to take the pain away.

In high school I dated 3 years, & planned to marry a wonderful man, Thomas Tamilio. He was the second child of 4, lucky to have terrific parents. He was handsome, respectful, athletic, smart, kind, quiet & loving.

He joined the Marines. During that time I spent many free hours with his family. I called his dad, 'dad', his mom taught me how to make Italian dishes. They treated me like their daughter & included me in many activities. I loved them dearly.

Tommy believed in what he was doing, he went to Vietnam, he wrote me letters about the children there that he enjoyed.
He had two months to go when a sniper shot him in the neck & killed him. He had just turned 20.

The casket was open.

At the grave, a Marine folded the flag & handed it to his mother. That jester enraged me. It felt as if the flag should comfort her for the loss she endured.
She didn't feel that way.
Every person responds differently.

I would dream he was coming home & awake to the same nightmare, he would never come home.
It took over 20 years & therapy to come to terms with his death.

I'm sure Trump meant well, he's just so inept, a selfish empty vessel.

I'm with Kelly on this. Condolence calls are a toxic battleground for politics.

Even if he was gauche, and I don't know that he was, Trump was trying to do the right thing in calling these people.

This is another example of folks jumping on a choice of a few words rather than a whole message. It's easy to criticise a selected phrase. The context matters.

Also, please would folks stop straining to be seen as victims. It's just endless. The actual victim was in the casket.
