Senators Prepare Bill to Block Mueller Firing
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is working on legislation that would prevent President Trump from firing special counsels without judicial review, the AP reported Thursday. Trump has recently expressed dissatisfaction with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and several congressmen are worried that if Sessions is fired, the president might then dismiss special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russia's involvement in the 2016 election. Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee said they are working with Graham on the legislation. Graham told reporters Thursday that the president’s treatment of Sessions isn’t “going over well in the Senate” and that “there will be holy hell to pay” if the attorney general is fired. Last week, senators told The Daily Beast that it would not be appropriate for Congress to step in and shield Mueller from possible political interference, with Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) suggesting Congress should stay in its “lane.”
