DEVELOPING: Widespread cyberattack hits major companies across Europe
A widespread cyberattack appeared to cause large-scale interruptions across Europe on Tuesday, with major companies in Ukraine, Russia, Britain and elsewhere reporting system disruptions.
Merck, an American pharmaceutical company, tweeted that its computer network "was compromised ... as part of the global hack." Russia's top oil producer, Rosneft, said a cyberattack hit its servers and computer systems at some banks, while the main airport in neighboring Ukraine was affected.
The latest disruptions follow the worldwide "WannaCry" malware attack in May that paralyzed an estimated 300,000 computers worldwide, including more than 45 public health organizations in Britain. In that case, a computer user would inadvertently download malicious software known as the Wanna Decryptor, or WannaCry, via email, locking the system and requiring a ransom be paid to hackers who could unlock it.
