Basically the Russians punked the FBI and they fell for it. If this 'fake' memo had never existed, or had been properly debunked upfront, the FBI would have had no real reason to even admit that there was any sort of review into Hillary's emails, which means that Trump and Faux News would not have had that issue to run with.
