I agree that unions are suited to tasks like ensuring people get paid holidays and that safety regulations are implemented.

They also usually make it hard for unionised businesses to be flexible in ways they need to be to survive.

It's the business that generates the job that makes it possible to buy a home. So my concern is usually to make sure that businesses are able to do what they need to do to succeed. If they need to lose staff, then they have to be able to do that.

For me, supporting and retraining people who lose their jobs is more the role of government. But getting support and retraining right is not easy.

I am usually not a big supporter of strikes. In the UK, it was a huge improvement when the Conservatives beat the miners' union, who held the country hostage by striking repeatedly during the 1970s.

Unions created the middle class & gave folks the ability to buy a home, have paid holidays & safety regulations.

Republicans have enacted the 'right to work' policy in many states, making workers low ball each other to get the job...

'Right to work' sounds so practical, it is harmful.
