'Lock them up!' Democrats want 'investigations and prosecutions' of Trump and his supporters

January 22, 2021
Once upon a time, we settled our political differences with elections. That quaint tradition is apparently over.

For Democrats, the 2020 election gave them control of the White House, the Senate, and House of Representatives, but it settled nothing. For them, the new power is a chance to address their perpetual grudges and take out as many of their opponents as possible.

Anand Giridharadas, a liberal writer for Time magazine, literally said Friday on MSNBC that the government should consider criminalizing right-leaning news outlets. In a segment about Democrats seeking "justice" for the Trump years, Giridharadas said, "Part of this justice is not just to focus on [former President Donald Trump]. It’s also on the media ecosystem. Fox News and OANN and all these other things that is not just offering a different point of view, as we all know. It is a brain-mashing machine for half of this country."

He went on to say, in earnest, "We need to shift the debate to say, is Fox News a thing that should exist in America? Is that not a violation of, you know, the basic ethics and norms of a civil society if not of the law?"

Prior to November 2020, or at least November 2016, this would have been a shocking thing to say on a major cable news channel, where everyone presumably understands and cherishes the First Amendment. But no. Show host Mika Brzezinski replied, "I don't disagree."

Charles Blow of the New York Times wrote earlier this week that the election turned out in his favor, but that calls by President Biden for "unity" were unacceptable. "You can’t have a feeling of unity after there was enforcement of a practice of cruelty," wrote Blow with typical melodrama. "There must be acknowledgment and accountability. There must be contrition and repentance." (His main gripe, by the way, was the prosecution of illegal immigrants who showed up in the U.S. with their children in tow.)

In December, the hilariously inconsistent Jennifer Rubin wrote at the Washington Post that, "A complete record of the past four years ... is a precondition to determine what criminal prosecutions, civil actions, professional discipline and employment decisions should follow." In other words, both public and private institutions should consider reprisals against Trump, the people who worked for him, and even just people who supported him.

Protect Democracy, a left-wing nonprofit organization, released a report that same month on what it described as "accountability options for Trump-era transgressions." The report suggested "government-facilitated commissions of inquiry, investigations and prosecutions by law enforcement." The report also offered that private companies could "prevent the financial and reputational rehabilitation" of those who worked for the Trump administration and Trump campaigns.

The way they talk is terrifying — and then they have the nerve to lecture on "incitement."

Democrats won't let it go. But it's not clear they've thought out what might happen if their opponents decide they won't let it go, either.
