Rising seas threaten Norfolk Naval Shipyard, raising fears of 'catastrophic damage' from climate change
Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia faces an existential threat: rising seas and extreme weather driven by climate change. Nine major floods in the past decade have damaged equipment at the shipyard, which repairs the submarines and aircraft carriers that enable the Pentagon to respond quickly to crises across the globe.
The problem goes beyond Norfolk — a report commissioned by the Navy found that 56 Naval facilities worth a combined $100 billion would be threatened if the sea level rose about 3 feet. “Every year you wait to make decisions and take actions, the risk goes up,” said retired Rear Adm. Jonathan White.
