The Dem's sued Nixon over Watergate & won.

History buffs may think this lawsuit sounds familiar: It echoes a similar legal tactic taken by the Democratic Party during the Watergate scandal in 1972. It filed suit against then-President Richard Nixon’s reelection committee seeking $1 million in damages for the break-in at the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate building.

By the way, one might wonder why the Dems are launching this suit rather than waiting for Mueller.

It seems pretty obvious. They think the Republicans will not proceed against Trump, regardless of the strength of the evidence against him. So they are taking the issues into a US court, so that ultimately, the matter will come before the Supreme Court. At least there, the law will be considered seriously.

That alone ought to encourage seriousness in Congress, lest the Republican party itself is seen to be a conspirator in the obstruction. The complaint makes it plain that the Dems are drawing the GoP into the web of deceit.
