I am not trying to blow a 6 inch hole thrpogh someone. I just want to stop them. That is why a 9mm round that is hollow point with 147 or higher grain will do just that.

That point splits up into about 6 pieces traveling through the body and destroying everything in its path. Plus, the higher grain creates a slower moving projectile which means the bullet stays inside instead of going clean through.

NO need for the 45 or 357 if one uses this. I do not disagree about the higher level of caliber and force behind a Magnum but it is overkill and the 9 is easier to handle with less recoil.

for a starter weapon, this will do a great job...

The .357 magnum will likely stop most Bears. Good choice...

If you want stopping power, get a .357.

My favorite handgun is my .45. But up North, I'll be carrying a .357. A .45 probably won't stop a charging bear, but a .357 might.
