Then and Now: Senator Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling in 2006

President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), and other prominent Democrats have been hypercritical of the Republicans’ handling of the debt ceiling debate. The left has spent the last week arguing that Republicans are terrorists and anarchists who are looking to hold the government hostage while collapsing the economy, but they fail to mention the stances they took on the debt ceiling just a few years ago.

IN PART:

"......Given the explosion of debt in the last few years, it is long past time for Washington to change course and adopt a new fiscal policy. After all, the future of our economy, the future of our nation, our children’s future, is at stake. And if the President and his [Democrat] allies believe that increasing our debt by another two, three, one trillion is the right thing to do, they should just be up front with it. They should explain why they think that more debt is good for our economy. They should explain why they think it’s fair to force our children and our grandchildren to finance our current lifestyle through higher taxes. Why it’s right to increase our nation’s dependence on foreign creditors. Maybe they can convince the public that they’re right, but I don’t think so. Look at the size of the debt. No one thinks it’s right. Most Americans know that increasing the debt is the last thing that we should be doing. After all, the baby boomers are about to retire. Under the circumstances, as almost any credible economist would tell you, we should be reducing the debt, not increasing the debt.....

HYPOCRITES:

Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. Therefore I intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.

So those must be the words of Republicans in Congress today, right? Nope. Those are actually the words of Sen. Reid and then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL)

WASHINGTON — Following the epic, 21-hour speech by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, supporting the defunding of Obamacare, either voters made so many calls to establishment Republicans that their phone lines melted, or those GOP leaders took their phones off the hook.

Even in this age of digital wizardry and limitless voicemail, callers could not get through at all to Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

A message said the senator was experiencing a high volume of calls and directed members of the public to call back later or visit his website.

It was the same story with the man who was the face of the GOP in the 2008 elections, former GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

His phone was off the hook, too. Callers got a message stating his voicemail box was full.

The Arizona senator apparently had other matters on his mind during the Cruz speech, tweeting, “Final episode of #Broadchurch tonight – one of the most entertaining shows on TV right now.�

That prompted conservative commentator Michelle Malkin to tweet, “Meanwhile, McCain is tweeting about a TV show. See the problem here, America?�

Callers to Minority Whip Sen John Cornyn, R-Texas, also got a message saying the line was busy, but at least those callers were sent to voicemail.

GOP leader opposes defunding

McConnell announced Monday he does not support the attempt by Cruz to defund Obamacare.

The GOP Senate leader claimed he opposes Obamacare, but he refused to support Cruz’s effort to block a vote on cloture, which effectively doomed the House bill that would have defunded Obamacare.

McConneil would have needed to get only 41 out of 46 Republican senators to vote to block cloture, but he would not support the effort.

He, and other establishment Republicans, fear they would take the blame for any government shutdown, even though the House bill is specifically designed to force Democrats to be the ones to shut down the government, should they refuse to defund Obamacare.

Neither party supporting Americans

That puts most Americans in the odd position of having neither the Democratic Party, nor the Republican Party, supporting their position on Obamacare.

A CBS News poll found most Americans, 52 percent, disapprove of Obamcare.

Democrats favor the health-care law because they consider it the president’s signature achievement.

Analysts believe GOP leaders refuse to mobilize their rank-and-file to fight Obamcare because they are afraid a government shutdown could cost them at the polls in the 2014 elections.

GOP leader blasted

Since McConnell directed his constituents to go to the Internet to express their views to him, WND went to his Facebook page to see what voters have to say.

At 1:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, McConnell posted this message on his Facebook page:

“All we need are 5 Senate Democrats to show enough courage to stand against their party and with the American people on this vote�

He got more than 100 responses, and almost all of them were extremely critical of the senator.

Only two messages supported McConnell.

Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA; P.L. 111-14 and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act (P.L. 111-152)—together referred to as the health reform law. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.

Through the health care reform law, thousands of Nevadans and millions of Americans have gained access to the affordable health care that they need and deserve. This reform will be implemented gradually through 2014, and many of the laws benefits are already being seen. For example, the health care law has prevented insurance companies from denying coverage for up to 17 million children with preexisting conditions, has enabled over 3 million young adults without insurance to be covered on their parents’ insurance policies, and has eliminated cost-sharing for over 54 million Americans in private insurance plans for their recommended preventive services, like mammograms and cholesterol and blood pressure screenings.

Seniors have also started seeing numerous benefits from health reform. Nationwide, 6.6 million seniors and people with disabilities have saved $7 billion on prescription drugs as a result of the health care reform law. In Nevada, 25,000 seniors received a $250 tax free rebate in 2010 when they reached the Medicare coverage gap known as the “donut hole.� Since the health reform law was enacted, Nevadans on Medicare have saved over $40.6 million on prescription drugs in the donut hole, and they can expect even more savings when the donut hole is closed in 2020.

Because of health care reform, Medicare now covers certain preventive services for seniors without charging the Part B coinsurance or deductible. These services can be extremely important for keeping seniors healthy. New Medicare enrollees receive annual wellness visit without cost sharing, while all “original Medicare� beneficiaries receive preventive services like flu shots, bone mass measurement, diabetes screenings, and prostate cancer screenings.

These and the many other accomplishments of the health care law have started us on course to put Nevadans and their families back in charge when making their health insurance decisions. You can find more information about the law at www.healthcare.gov and http://www.hhs.gov/healthcare/.

I am proud of the work that Congress and President Obama have done in order to ensure that Nevadans and Americans will not have to worry about health care coverage when they need it the most. Implementation of the law is a work in progress and there are many more benefits for Nevadans to come. I am hopeful that my colleagues will work with me to make improvements to the law as it is fully implemented. I oppose efforts to repeal the law because it would put insurance companies back in charge of what care patients receive and allow them to return to the days when there were no requirements that they spend premiums on actual care. Repeal would re-open the Medicare “donut hole�, raising prescription drug prices for seniors and reduce the solvency of the program by more than a decade. Repeal would let insurance companies go back to denying coverage to sick children and would result in people with pre-existing conditions losing protection from discrimination. Furthermore, according to the Congressional Budget Office, repealing the health care law would increase the deficit by $109 billion in the next ten years alone.

Matthews also went after Cruz for questioning Chuck Hagel’s foreign ties in a “Joe McCarthy fashion� during his confirmation hearing.

“He has contempt for the American political system. He is not a member of any political party that I can tell,� he said. “His behavior has been totally and utterly destructive.�

Americans have not learned a “single thing about Obamacare� because of Ted Cruz, he added. “He doesn’t teach, he is a demagogue.�

After listening to Matthews and his panel fume about Cruz and his “antics,� it’s pretty clear the Texas Republican has struck a nerve.

WASHINGTON (AP) — With new health insurance markets launching next week, the Obama administration is unveiling premiums and plan choices for 36 states where the federal government is taking the lead to cover uninsured residents. Before tax credits that work like an upfront discount for most consumers, sticker-price premiums for a mid-range benchmark plan will average $328 a month nationally for an individual, comparable to payments for a new car.

The overview of premiums and plan choices, released Wednesday by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, comes as the White House swings into full campaign mode to promote the benefits of the Affordable Care Act to a skeptical public. Congressional Republicans, meanwhile, refuse to abandon their quest to derail "Obamacare" and flirt with a government shutdown to force the issue. Sebelius stressed the positive in a preview call with reporters. Consumers will be able to choose from an average of 53 plan options when the new markets open Oct. 1 for people who don't have health care on the job. "For millions of Americans, these new options will finally make health insurance work within their budgets," she said. A report by her department estimated that about 95 percent of consumers will have two or more insurers to choose from. And the administration says premiums will generally be lower than what congressional budget experts estimated when the legislation was being debated. About one-fourth of the insurers participating are new to the individual coverage market, a sign that could be good for competition. But averages can be misleading. When it comes to the new health care law, individuals can get dramatically different results based on their particular circumstances. Where you live, the plan you pick, family size, age, tax credits based on your income, and even tobacco use will all impact the bottom line. All those variables could make the system hard to navigate. For example, the average individual premium for a benchmark policy known as the "second-lowest cost silver plan" ranges from a low of $192 in Minnesota to a high of $516 in Wyoming. That's the sticker price, before tax credits. In the three states with the highest uninsured population, the benchmark plan will average $373 in California, $305 in Texas, and $328 in Florida. Differences between states can be due to the number of insurers competing and other factors. "One surprise is Texas," said Larry Levitt of the Kaiser Family Foundation. "That is a state that has put up roadblocks to implementation, but the premiums there are below average." The second-lowest-cost silver plan is important because tax credits are keyed to its cost in local areas. But consumers don't have to take silver. They can pick from four levels of coverage, from bronze to platinum. All the plans cover the same benefits and cap annual out-of-pocket expenses at $6,350 for an individual, $12,700 for families. The big difference is cost sharing through annual deductibles and copayments. Bronze covers 60 percent of expected costs; silver, 70 percent, on up to platinum at 90 percent. Bronze plans have the lowest premiums and the highest cost sharing. The administration report found that factoring in tax credits, a 27-year-old making $25,000 a year would see the premium for the benchmark silver plan drop to $145 in nearly every state. But if that hypothetical young adult used the tax credit to buy the cheapest bronze plan, he or she could cut the monthly premium to $74 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, $102 in Orlando, and $119 in Pittsburgh. For a family of four making $50,000, the tax credit would cut the monthly premium for the benchmark silver plan to $282. But if the family used its tax credit to buy the cheapest bronze plan, the premium would be $26 a month in Dallas-Fort Worth, $126 in Orlando, and $209 in Pittsburgh. In the Washington, D.C., metro area, the hypothetical family could find a zero-premium bronze plan, while the lowest an individual could get after applying their tax credit would be $66. Such differences are sure to leave many people scratching their heads. Officials said they're due to complicated interactions between the tax credits and insurance company pricing strategies in dynamic markets. Another outside analyst said the administration analysis of premiums is consistent with what the 14 states running their own insurance markets have reported. But Dan Mendelson, president of the market analysis firm Avalere Health, said the focus on premiums is too narrow. "The analysis doesn't account for cost sharing," Mendelson said. "This is a limitation." To get an idea of the true cost of coverage, consumers have to add up premiums and their expected out-of-pocket costs. "Consumers are going to need to shop," Mendelson added. "Sometimes a silver offering doesn't cost much more than a bronze." He added two other caveats: Be ready for significant cost sharing, and check carefully that your doctors and nearby hospitals are in the plan's network. Starting Jan. 1, virtually all Americans will be required to carry health insurance or face fines. At the same time, the health care law will prohibit insurance companies from turning away people in poor health, or charging them more. And it will limit what insurers can charge their oldest customers. Experts say the plans under the health care law are not comparable to what's currently sold on the individual health insurance markets, because the coverage is broader and the financial protection for policyholders is more robust. Obama is directly engaging in the promotional campaign for the health care law. Tuesday, he and former President Bill Clinton talked health care during a session sponsored by Clinton's foundation. And Obama is planning a speech on the law on Thursday. In response to the administration's premium and plan-choice information, a spokesman for Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said that premiums that are "lower than projected" are not the same as "lower than they are now." "The White House is making every effort possible to spin the bad news that seems to come every day, but the American people know that even this rosy scenario is not what they were promised when Democrats were ramming this bill through Congress on a party-line vote," McConnell spokesman Don Stewart said in a statement. - See more at:
